1. Spend time and Play with your cat - Just spending some quiet time before work, after work or midday, will make a big difference. Cats love to be talked to and made to feel important. Most cats love to run and play. It is a physical release and helps keep them physically healthy and emotionally happy. Make sure your cat has lots of good fun toys that he likes and work to engage him in play. Swing that feathery flyer, point the laser pointer on the wall or roll a ball. Do this for at least 10 minutes a day. Cats like to be talked gently too, especially kittens. This helps them bond with you.
2. Yearly check-ups. Ensuring that your cat has yearly check-ups to help look for any medical problems early is a very good habit. During the yearly exam, your veterinarian will also determine if your cat requires any vaccines, flea control or heartworm preventative medications. These will help to keep your cat healthy and comfortable.
3. Good daily care. Daily monitoring of your cats appetite, urinations, bowel movements are a part of being a good responsible cat owner. Healthy cats have a good appetite, normal urinations and healthy bowel movements. Any abnormalities should be noted and any persistent changes should be reported to your veterinarian.
4. Vet Care. Take kitty to the Vet when kitty is not acting as usual or when you have any doubts. Especially kittens. They can fade and even die in as soon as 2 - 3 days if sick, dehydrated, have constant diarrhea, etc.
5. Feed a good quality food. Good nutrition is a very important part of a cat's health and is the most proactive thing you can do to keep your cat healthy. Over the past two decades, a lot of science has gone into formulating cat foods to optimize a cat's health. Take advantage of that knowledge by feeding a premium cat food. Cat foods that list real ingredients rather than by products are better. Cats do best when fed twice a day at the same times every day. Another way to be a good cat owner is not letting your cat get fat. Feed a consistent quality diet - Use a high quality food with AAFCO approval formulated for your cats' life stage. Supplement with healthy treats only in moderation. Blends with the right balance of animal-based proteins, fats and fibers with antioxidants, vitamins and select nutrients to help protect your cat's health.
6. Supply plenty of fresh water at all times - Clean the water bowl once daily and make sure it is always full.
7. Exercise - Daily exercise will keep your cat fit. Additional exercise can help with possible behavior problems as well.
Adjust food intake for body type, provide healthy treats, and exercise regularly to avoid extra weight gain. Make sure they are eating a good quality food that they enjoy.
8. Daily grooming. Groom - Most cats like to be groomed or brushed. This also stimulates the skin and gets rid of dead hair. Regular grooming will also help keep your house cleaner from less shedding hair and helps prevent hairballs. Monitoring your cat’s nails and trimming when needed, brushing his teeth at least every other day and daily hair brushing are important to prevent unnecessary problems such as dental disease, torn nails, and uncomfortable hairballs. A well taken care of cat should never need to be declawed.
